Supported Fish

Matsyasana

A passive chest opener over a prop. Nothing to hold, nothing to achieve — you just lie there and open.

Supported Fish Photograph coming soon

A rigged MakeHuman figure animated into Supported Fish from this guide's own alignment cues — not a photo or scan of a real instructor. Same avatar as Mountain Pose and Downward Dog. Shown with the bolster the pose rests on, sized from the measured lift of the chest — without it the shape would read as a body held up by nothing. Built with MPFB2 from the MakeHuman community CC0 system assets.

How to do it

  1. Place a bolster or rolled blanket lengthways behind you.
  2. Lie back over it so it supports the length of your spine.
  3. Let the arms fall open to the sides.
  4. Stay for three to five minutes, breathing easily.

Why it helps

  • Opens the chest and front of the shoulders passively
  • Encourages fuller breathing
  • Counters a day spent rounded over a screen

Common mistakes

  • Using a prop so tall the neck is thrown back.
  • Holding the arms up rather than letting them rest.

Before you try it

  • Support the head if the neck hangs. Come out at any lower-back pinching.

This is general information, not medical advice. If you're working with an injury, a health condition, or you're pregnant, check with a doctor or physical therapist and tell your teacher before class.

Make it easier

  • Lower prop, or a folded blanket instead of a bolster.
  • Cushion under the head.
  • Knees bent, feet on the floor.
