Tree Pose

Vrksasana

The first balance most people learn, and a useful daily check on how steady you actually are.

Tree Pose Photograph coming soon

A rigged MakeHuman figure animated into Tree Pose from this guide's own alignment cues — not a photo or scan of a real instructor. Same avatar as Mountain Pose and Downward Dog; the clip enters from Mountain Pose, holds with a visible breath, and releases back — with the lifted foot placed on the inner leg, well above the knee, with the feet solved onto one floor plane on every frame. Built with MPFB2 from the MakeHuman community CC0 system assets.

How to do it

  1. Stand tall and shift your weight into one foot.
  2. Place the other foot on the ankle, calf, or inner thigh — never the side of the knee.
  3. Press foot and leg into each other to create stability.
  4. Bring the hands to the heart or overhead, and fix your gaze on something still.

Why it helps

  • Trains single-leg balance and ankle stability
  • Strengthens the standing-leg hip
  • Builds focus — balance requires attention you can't fake

Common mistakes

  • Placing the foot against the knee joint itself.
  • Letting the standing hip push out to the side.

Before you try it

  • Practise near a wall if balance is unreliable; kickstand the toes down if needed.

This is general information, not medical advice. If you're working with an injury, a health condition, or you're pregnant, check with a doctor or physical therapist and tell your teacher before class.

Make it easier

  • Toes on the floor, heel on the ankle (kickstand).
  • One hand on a wall or chair.
  • Foot to the calf rather than the thigh.
