A morning of zazen at Matador Beach

ZCLA Beach Retreat

Walking meditation along the shore and seated practice by the sea caves, led by the Zen Center of Los Angeles sangha.

Half-day, 7am–noon Zen Center of Los Angeles

The Zen Center of Los Angeles takes its practice to the coast for a morning: kinhin — walking meditation — along the shore, seated zazen by the caves at Matador Beach, and shared poetry.

It runs 7am to noon, and it is open to everyone. No prior meditation experience is expected, and a $10 donation is suggested rather than required.

ZCLA posts these on its own events calendar; dates move with the season and the tide, so check there before setting out.

What the morning holds

Kinhin along the shore

Walking meditation on the sand — the moving half of Zen practice, at the pace of the group.

Zazen by the caves

Seated practice by the sea caves, with the water as the only timekeeper.

Shared poetry

The sangha reads together — a long-standing part of ZCLA’s beach mornings.

Open to all

No prior meditation experience needed, and a $10 suggested donation rather than a ticket price.
